Product Introduction
The Modular Artillery Charge System (MACS) is the US Army's standard modular propelling charge for 155 mm howitzers, replacing the older M4A2 White Bag, M119A2 Red Bag, and M203 Red Bag family of cloth-bag charges. Unlike bag charges, each MACS module has a rigid combustible cartridge case that is fully consumed on firing — no cloth bag residue is left in the chamber.
MACS uses two distinct module types, immediately identifiable by colour, that gunners stack in the chamber to build the required firing zone. This gives artillery crews faster charge preparation, more consistent ballistics, and full compatibility with automated ammunition-handling systems on modern self-propelled howitzers.
M231 — Green Module (Low Zone)
Low-zone charge. Used in configurations of 1 or 2 modules for firing zones 1–2 (close-in fire).

- Propellant: M39 double-base
- Zones: 1 (single module) and 2 (two modules stacked)
- Typical use: close-support and training fire missions
M232 / M232A1 — White Module (High Zone)
High-zone charge. Used in configurations of 3, 4, or 5 modules for firing zones 3–5 (medium to long range).
- Colour: white / tan combustible case
- Propellant: JA2 double-base (M232A1 uses improved formulation)
- Zones: 3 (three modules) through 5 (five modules)
- Typical use: long-range fire, extended-range projectiles (M549 RAP, M982 Excalibur)
