The two workhorse bag charges of 155mm artillery
Before the modern modular MACS system, and still widely fielded today, the US Army and NATO 155 mm artillery relied on cloth bag propelling charges colour-coded by zone group:
- White bags (M3A1, M4A2) — low and mid zones (Zones 1–5, later 3–7 for M4A2)
- Red bags (M119A2, M203) — high zones (Zones 3–8, plus max zone 8S for M203)
These bag charges remain in service with dozens of nations operating M198, M777, and older M109 howitzers, and continued production is a critical operational requirement.

The M203 is the M119A2's high-performance cousin, providing the "supercharge" Zone 8S maximum range for M777 and M198 howitzers. It uses M30A1 triple-base propellant like the M119A2 but in a fixed, non-adjustable single-bag configuration optimised for extreme range. See our M203 product page.
Modernisation path: MACS M231/M232
Modern armed forces are transitioning from cloth bag charges to the MACS Modular Artillery Charge System — rigid combustible-case modules (green M231 for low zones, white M232 for high zones) that eliminate cloth residue and speed up loading.
