The 122mm Grad — the most widely fielded MRL system in the world
The BM-21 Grad (Russian: Град, "hail") is a Soviet-designed 122 mm multiple rocket launcher (MRL) introduced in 1963. Six decades later it remains the most widely fielded MRL system in the world, in service with more than 60 countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.
The Grad's enduring appeal comes from a simple formula: 40 launcher tubes firing 122 mm rockets in a 20-second salvo, delivering saturation area fire out to 20–40 km depending on rocket variant. It is cheap, rugged, easy to operate, and devastating against troop concentrations, unarmoured vehicles, and light structures.
