23mm x 152mmB Anti-Aircraft Ammunition

The 23mm x 152mmB is a high-velocity, heavy-duty autocannon round engineered primarily for the ZU-23-2 towed anti-aircraft gun and the ZSU-23-4 "Shilka" self-propelled system. Known for its reliability and destructive potential, it is a staple of tactical air defense and light-armor engagement globally.

The "B" in its designation refers to the belted base of the cartridge case, which ensures positive headspacing and reliable extraction during the extremely high rates of fire (up to 2,000 rounds per minute per twin-barrel setup).

Common Projectile Variants

TypeDesignationFunction

HEI-TOFZTHigh-Explosive Incendiary with Tracer. Explodes on impact with aircraft skins; the tracer allows for manual aim correction.

API-TBZTArmor-Piercing Incendiary with Tracer. Hardened core designed to penetrate ~15mm of steel at 1,000m. Ideal for APCs and light vehicles.

HEIOFZHigh-Explosive Incendiary. High fragmentation yield for anti-personnel and unarmored targets.

TP / TP-TPGR / PGRTTarget Practice. Inert projectile used for training and weapon calibration.

Operational Role

While originally designed to obliterate low-flying aircraft and helicopters, the 23mm x 152mmB has become equally famous for its "technical" use—mounted on trucks for direct fire support. It is highly effective against light fortifications, infantry clusters, and thin-skinned armored vehicles.
